Eating Disorder Treatment

Do you find yourself feeling trapped in your relationship with food? Your relationship with food is important but an unhealthy relationship with food can bring with it feelings of being trapped, stuck, and shamed.

Eating Disorders are complex and serious, psychological disorders characterized by distress relating to a person’s eating behaviors, relationship with food, and perception of themself. The most common Eating Disorders are Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorder. However, there are other Eating Disorders that do not fall into these three categories. With all Eating Disorders, it is important to acknowledge that these are psychological challenges that include physical symptoms.

Symptoms of Anorexia

Individuals with Anorexia often find themselves preoccupied with:

  • an overwhelming fear of gaining weight
  • obsessing over restrictions of certain foods
  • A fear of food in general

With this, often, an individual with Anorexia has an abnormally low body weight, a preoccupation with losing weight, and an inability to recognize their low body weight. People who are struggling with Anorexia often purposefully restrict their caloric intake, and some additionally rely on overexercising or purging by throwing up or using laxatives. There is usually an immense level of distress surrounding eating and being around certain foods.

Symptoms of Bulimia

People struggling with Bulimia feel stuck in a cycle of binging food and relying on self-induced purging (throwing up, laxatives, excessive exercise) or restricting food. This cycle can lead to individuals feeling out of control, particularly around food. Similarly, with anorexia, body image disturbance is frequently experienced with the distress surrounding their relationship with food.

Symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder

Binge-Eating Disorder is characterized by a cycle of eating large quantities of food, which often leads to feelings of intense guilt, shame, and physical discomfort. Similar to bulimia, people who struggle with binge-eating, often feel out of control and experience distress around food.
