Betrayal Trauma

Betrayal trauma can manifest in various ways, and individuals may experience a range of emotional, physical, and psychological symptoms. Here are six common symptoms associated with betrayal trauma:

Intense Emotional Pain: Betrayal trauma often leads to profound emotional pain, including feelings of grief, anger, sadness, confusion, and disbelief. The emotional toll of betrayal can be overwhelming and long-lasting.

Trust Issues: Following an experience of betrayal, individuals may struggle with trust issues in relationships. It can be challenging to trust others, including those who were not involved in the betrayal, leading to difficulties in forming new connections.

Hyper-vigilance: Betrayal trauma can result in a heightened state of alertness and hyper-vigilance. Individuals may constantly be on guard, anticipating potential threats or betrayals, which can be exhausting and impact overall well-being.

Sudden Mood Swings: Fluctuating emotions, sudden mood swings, and intense reactions to triggers are common symptoms of betrayal trauma. Individuals may find themselves cycling between feelings of anger, sadness, numbness, and anxiety unpredictably.

Intrusive Thoughts and Memories: Survivors of betrayal trauma may experience intrusive thoughts and memories related to the traumatic event. These thoughts can be distressing and persistent and interfere with daily functioning, leading to heightened levels of stress and anxiety.

Negative Thoughts: The trauma of sexual betrayal can make your mind and thoughts feel like a dangerous place. The barrage of negative self-talk, self-blame, and condemnation makes you feel like a shell of your former self.
